Kazakhstan Bureau of Statistics: The Number of Greenhouses in the Country Increased by 10%

The number of greenhouses in the Republic of Kazakhstan increased by 10% compared to the previous year, reports the Bureau of National Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

As of January 1, 2026, there were 2,319 greenhouses in the country with a total area of 12.1 thousand square meters. The growth reflects ongoing expansion in the protected cultivation sector and strengthening domestic vegetable production capacity.

Structure of the Greenhouse Market

Most greenhouses are used for vegetable production — 2,159 units or 93.1% of the total. Other types account for 160 units, including:

●flower production — 47 units (2.0%)

●mushroom production — 6 units (0.3%)

●other purposes — 107 units (4.6%)

By size distribution, greenhouses up to 10,000 sq. m. dominate with 90.9%. Facilities between 10,001 and 50,000 sq. m. account for 8.1%, while those above 50,001 sq. m. represent 1.0%.

Industrial greenhouses larger than 5,000 sq. m. make up 23.5%, while farmer-scale greenhouses up to 5,000 sq. m. account for 76.5%. Large industrial complexes are mainly concentrated in Turkestan and Almaty regions as well as in Shymkent city.

Age and Regional Distribution

66.3% of greenhouses have been in operation for less than 10 years, 30.3% for 11–20 years, and 3.4% for more than 21 years.

Turkestan region leads with 62.4% of the total number of greenhouses. The region accounts for 75.3% of the total utilized area and 49.2% of gross harvest.

Gross Harvest and Key Crops

In 2025, total vegetable production in greenhouses reached 168.7 thousand tons, which is 1.1% higher than in 2024. The growth was driven by expanded cucumber cultivation areas and the increase in greenhouse space during Q2 2025.

Turkestan region, Shymkent city, Almaty, Aktobe, and Pavlodar regions contributed the most to the total harvest.

In addition to tomatoes and cucumbers, greenhouse farms cultivate perennial crops such as bananas, lemons, strawberries, blueberries, and melons.
